Giving & Receiving Feedback Effectively
Traditionally, feedback was given annually through a performance appraisal by a leader to a “subordinate”. Today in this world of disruption and team work, being able to give and receive feedback on a daily basis is a critical interpersonal skill that supports an agile culture.
In our roles as leaders, project managers, supervisors, trainers, business owners, physicians or as active team members, providing feedback allows us to:
-
Acknowledge good performance
-
Address performance or behaviour that needs improving
-
Guide learning & development
The other side of giving feedback is the ability to receive feedback effectively. It’s important to maintain ongoing, positive communication with others and let them know we’re listening and open to their perceptions and experience.
Workshop Objectives:
-
Contribute by sharing your experience regarding barriers & best practices for effective feedback
-
Consider the advantages of giving feedback constructively & respectfully rather than criticizing
-
Use a practical model for giving both positive & developmental (negative) feedback
-
Plan to use feedback as an ongoing communication tool to improve trust, build relationships & achieve goals
“One of the most challenging aspects of communication is being able to share our opinions with others in a way that is respectful, appropriate, meaningful & genuine.” Pat Hirst
