During a workshop in 2002, a participant suggested I write a book. He believed a collection of my stories and examples would help him apply ideas to improve his life. I loved his suggestion although I didn’t manage to start the project until 10 years later! I was compelled with a calling to share ideas that may be of service to others.
The creative process began in 2012 with my book coach, Les Kletke. When we spoke each week, we discussed the chapter I had created and outlined the next one I would work on. During this process two readers reviewed each chapter. The writing and re-writing continued. I took the draft manuscript to the next level by working with Lois Braun, a content editor who helped me find my voice.
Some days were so frustrating. I just couldn’t seem to express my thoughts clearly. The path ahead seemed so daunting at times I wanted to quit. Luckily, I was buoyed by many caring people. Notable authors like Tom Rath and Paul J. Zak inspired me to continue when they gave me permission to use their references and encouraged me to keep on going. Editors continued to help me focus. After trying unsuccessfully to find an agent, I was able to find a path to create and distribute the book through FriesenPress in Victoria, B.C. that paved the way.
So, after many expectant and uncomfortable months, like a new child, In a Perfect World has arrived. Each time I receive congratulations, I am fully aware that like most things in life, our accomplishments are not solely our own. Although we may have the vision and the responsibility for their completion, we don’t get anywhere without the help of others. It was a labour of love and a team effort!
I have been blessed with the support and contribution of many skilled people through this process. In the coming months as the book reaches readers, I will be delighted to share feedback about the book and explore communication topics that arise. What ideas do you want to explore, to create your own perfect world?
